Abstract

Hollow mouldings incorporating an insert prefabricated by injection moulding and featuring small projections which can be locally melted just prior to mounting the insert in the mould wall, and blow moulding a parison to enclose and fuse with the insert surface. Pref. the insert surface features a continuous helical thread pattern, pref. with a triangular cross-section, to provide the small projections for ready fusion. The insert should be made of materials with a m. pt. at least as high as the thermoforming parison material. Esp. suitable for mfr. of vehicle petrol tanks from e.g. polyolefin materials, the insert body providing local strength for coupling fuel lines, gauges, etc. Fusion seal preferred to a mechanical fit to avoid leakage of dangerous or inflammable materials. Use of inserts for local strength allows most of container wall to be formed as thin as possible to save wt. and cost. The insert may incorporate or substantially comprises a metal element to sustain the overally shape of the insert when heated.
