Abstract

1442217 Diminishing vibrations CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE 22 Aug 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 39882/73 Heading B7S [Also in Division F2] Propeller and wave-induced vibrations in a ship's hull are damped by an inertia weight vibration damper fitted into the hull of the ship above the propeller. The vibration damper (depicted in more detail in Figs. 1 and 2, not shown, but see Division F2) consists essentially of a chamber containing two gas spaces (12, 13) separated by a body of liquid (11), the liquid acting as an inertia weight tuned by the gas, one of the gas spaces being subdivided into two compartments 14, 15 connected by a device (a so-called fluidic diode 17, not shown) which makes flow from 14 to 15 easier than from 15 to 14. As shown the chamber of the damper is of anchor shape in cross-section to provide symmetry, and has three gas spaces acting on the body of liquid. The presence of the fluidic diode enables the damper to adjust itself so that its frequency approaches the excitation frequency of the ship. The damper has an auxiliary damper 20 in communication with it via the fluidic diode. The auxiliary damper contains a smaller mass of liquid and comes into operation at a lower frequency than the main damper so as to damp the vibrations which arise when the propeller screw is being started up from rest.
