Abstract

1442180 Colour television tubes RCA CORPORATION 3 July 1973 [3 July 1972] 31643/73 Heading H1D A colour television tube shadow mask comprises a thin metal sheet having multi-apertured masking portion 28 and imperforate peripheral portion 32 attached to metal reinforcing frame 29, portion 32 having a resistance to heat flow which is # 11 % that of a portion 32 formed by a solid sheet of thickness equal to that of the masking portion, so as to impede heat conduction between portion 28 and frame 29. A method of fabricating a temporary apertured mask for photographic production of a phosphor screen comprises applying to at least one surface of the metal sheet an organic material coating the viscosity of which is reversibly reduced by heating to provide a thin film closing the mask apertures, heating to break the thin film and form a bead inside and partially closing each aperture, and cooling to harden. The above construction ensures the outer apertures remain sufficiently heated to break the thin films, and the frame serves as a heat sink to heat generated by electrons. Skirt portion 32 in Fig. 7 has etched dimples or depressions, and skirt portion (60) in Fig. 9 (not shown) is of lesser thickness than the masking portion. Extending the lengths of portions 32 and (60) further increases the heat resistance. Alternatively, the masking portion is of a high-conductive metal such as Cu, and the skirt portion of a low conductive metal such as steel. Preferably the mass/unit area of the skirt portion substantially equals the mass/unit area of the mask portion. The mask may be 0À006-0À007 inch steel welded to a 0À93 inch steel frame. Mask apertures may be opposed cups (38), (39), Fig. 4 (not shown). Cups (38) are substantially uniform over the masking portion, while cups (39) are graded. Shadowmask apertures and frame dimensions are given. In Fig. 7, the cups extend in the same pattern as the apertures into skirt 32, the mass ratio being 57 : 62. Other ratios are given. The organic material comprising demineralized water, wetting agent, p.v.a. water solution and ethylene glycol may be applied in an upward trajectory as in Specification 1,374,728. Heating cycles are described. Reference is made to a one piece mask electrode, and also heating of the frame 29 (Fig. 11, not shown).
