Abstract

1300480 Luminescent screens LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - GmbH 15 Oct 1970 [16 Oct 1969 29 April 1970] 49109/70 Heading H1D In the manufacture of a multi-dot colour television screen by irradiating a sensitive layer through a shadow mask by means of electrons, the dots are made smaller than the corresponding apertures in the shadow mask by applying an electric field between the screen and the shadow mask during the irradiation step. This step may be part of the process of forming the phosphor dots themselves; alternatively it may be part of the process of forming an opaque layer with apertures in which the phosphor dots may be deposited by known methods, the effective size of the dots in this case being determinized by the size of the apertures in the opaque layer. The electric field causes the electrons exposing the dots near the edges of the screen to be displaced towards the centre. This can be corrected by a suitable magnetic field or by moving the centre of deflection forwards, e.g. by moving the deflection coils. Alternatively the shadow mask may be displaced towards the electron gun, and if the mask is supported by bimetallic elements for temperature-compensation purposes such displacement may be effected by cooling the bimetallic elements. Instead of correcting the positions of the dots in these ways the completed tube may be operated with an electric field between the mask and the screen.
