Abstract

1441900 Uses of luminescence WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 23 May 1975 [12 June 1974] 22848/75 Heading C4S [Also in Division B2] Discharge lamp envelopes are provided with a spectrum-modifying (e.g. U.V.-fluorescent) coating by preparing a composition comprising spectrum-modifying particles, alumina particles in a weight ratio to the spectrum-modifying particles of 0.01 to 0.04: 1, and an aqueous solution of polyethylene oxide having a viscosity of 20 to 200 centipoises, coating the envelope with the composition, and lehring at 400‹ to 550‹ C. The spectrum-modifying particles may be a halophosphate phosphor, one silicate, calcium tungstate phosphor, or a mixed cadmium sulphide/cadmium selenide phosphor. The alumina is preferably a fumed alumina of about 300 Šngstr÷m units particle size, or may be precipitated alumina of 600 Šngstr÷m units particles. It is preferably dispersed in water before addition to the composition preferably together with a flexibilizer (e.g. glycerol or triethanol amine). Wetting agents and antifoaming agents may also be present in the composition. The polyethylene oxide concentration is about 0À8 to 1À0% wt./volume. Lehring may be performed in air, or if necessary, in an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen.
