Abstract

1441598 Protective guards; vehicle doors FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 27 Nov 1973 54891/73 Headings B7B and B7J A vehicle body 10 has a passenger door 11 having an outer sheet metal panel 13 or an outer skin of plastics material either of which may be reinforced with a longitudinally extending beam to resist intrusion by an impacting vehicle. A passenger restraint member 14 having energy absorbing properties extends over substantially the whole of the interior of panel 13. The member 14 may be of foamed plastics material the density of which is adjusted by fillers or internal holes to control the stiffness. If the vehicle is subjected to a side impact while stationary, local deformation occurs, Fig. 1b, thus causing the member 14 to move inwards towards the passenger 12 who is thrown against the member during subsequent sideways acceleration caused by the impact. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the member 14 has a slot 17 to receive a vertically sliding window 18. The member 14 may include collapsible sheet metal reinforcements to control its energy absorbing characteristics.
