Abstract

1441332 Packaging machines; cartons FIELD SONS & CO Ltd 10 July 1974 [11 July 1973] 33055/73 Headings B8C and B8P In apparatus for close packing articles 14 of triangular cross-section, the articles are advanced edge-to-edge on conveyer 10 from which they pass to a slower moving conveyer 12 somewhat below conveyer 10. The leading edges of alternate articles 14 on conveyer 10 will ride up the trailing side 20 of the slower moving articles so that alternate articles are rotated to provide the close-packed array. The relative position of adjacent rollers 28, 56 carrying belts 10, 12 is adjustable to suit different sizes of article, and the speed of conveyer drive rollers 30, 54 is variable through the gear-box 44 of motor 46. A brake 48 may be applied to stop conveyer 10 when a sensor on guide 66 detects any hold up of articles on conveyer 12. The above apparatus may be combined with article wrapping apparatus 15 having supply conveyer 76 and a carton erecting and packaging apparatus 17. The cartons comprise a base 100 from which front, rear, and side panels 110, 112, 114 are folded up to form an open tray configuration with a lid 120 extending from panel 112. Lid 120 has fold line 141, and perforations 142 allowing a central portion to be torn open and folded and tucked behind panel 110 for viewing and access to the contents. Cartons 78 in the Fig. 11 state are intermittently conveyed beside conveyers 10, 12 to receive close packed articles 14 by means of a reciprocating pusher, each carton is then incrementally lowered to receive further batches of articles. Panel 110 is then folded up, flap 122 is glued, and the lid 120 is lowered, by means not described.
