Abstract

1441191 Cultivating bacteria on residual oil in tankers RAMOT UNIVERSITY AUTHORITY FOR APPLIED RESEARCH & INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT Ltd 20 March 1974. [3 April 1973] 12365/74 Heading C6F [Also in Division A4] A process for cleaning a cargo compartment of an oil tanker and for converting the oil residues into an ecologically acceptable form, comprises flooding the compartment with water, e.g. sea water, adding a source of nitrogen, e.g. ammonium salt, urea, or a nitrate, and a source of phosphorus, e.g. potassium phosphate, and aerating continuously the contents of the compartment whilst growing bacteria therein. The bacteria may comprise those present in sea water and oil residues or may be provided by adding an inoculum of bacteria of the genus Arthrobacter. The emulsion obtained by the process may be discharged into the sea or further treated to harvest protein and other fermentation products therefrom.
