Abstract

1441141 Forming carpet backings; attaching backings to carpets POLYFLEET Ltd 4 June 1974 [16 March 1973] 12883/73 Headings B5A and B5N [Also in Division B2] A backing on a carpet is formed by rendering the surfaces of rubber or other polymer granules tacky by the application of heat or adhesive, applying the granules to a carpet either before or after agglomerating them into a backing layer and compressing the carpet and granules together. Granules from a hopper 15 are distributed on a conveyer 16 by a conveyer 21, heated by infra-red heaters 17 and compressed into a sheet by rollers 19, 20. A carpet is fed from a roll 4 by driven rollers 9 and 13 and a tensioning and guiding system 12, and laminated with the backing between rollers 19 and 22. After passing through heater 24 the backing is embossed by rollers 25, 26 and cooled by air blowers 29, 30. The backed carpet passes through a loop control 32 before measuring and cutting by a device 33, or is rolled up by driven rollers 35, 36. Heated granules may also be applied to a paper carrier, compressed, and a second layer applied before lamination to a carpet, which may then be cut up into carpet tiles. Granules may be attached by casting them on the back of the carpet with adhesive instead of heating the granules.
