Abstract

1441074 Pile drivers RAYMOND INTERNATIONAL Inc 14 Aug 1974 [27 Aug 1973] 35822/74 Heading B3H A pile driver particularly for underwater operation comprises a casing with a ram 60 mounted slidably therein for impacting an anvil 114 and hydraulic circuitry for pressurizing annular chambers 82, 84 to effect a working stroke, the chambers 82, 84 being separated from the end chambers 180, 182 of the casing by seals 74, 78. The end chambers 180, 182 are interconnected by an axial bore 94 through the ram 60. The anvil 114 has a stem 118 which projects out of the casing through a seal 112. The ram is formed with a lower section 60c which defines the lower chamber 84, an upper section 60a of smaller diameter and which defines the upper chamber 82 and an intermediate portion 60b. During a stroke of the ram hydraulic fluid is allowed to flow freely along the axial bore 94 between the chambers 180, 182. A transverse set of bores 96 lead to an intermediate annular chamber from the axial bore 94. The hydraulic circuitry, Fig. 6, includes a main switching valve 40, an upstroke pilot valve 42, a downstroke pilot valve 44 and a latching pilot valve 46. Hydraulic pressure is applied from a pump 130 to a line 140 leading to the lower annular chamber 84 to raise the ram 60. During raising of the ram 60 transverse ports 104, 102 in the casing are successively communicated to the lower chamber 84 to pressurized lines 162, 170 successively to operate valves 42, 44. Opening of the valves 42, 44 pressurizes line 150 to open valve 40 and pressurize line 148 leading to the upper chamber 82. The ram then descends due to the differential pressure and transverse ports 102, 104 are connected to the axial bore 94 through the bores 96 in turn. This causes line 150 to be connected to drain and valve 40 to connect line 148 to drain. This is timed to occur just before, just after or just as the ram strikes the anvil. If desired an hydraulic delay arrangement may be included in the line 162.
