Abstract

1441014 Polyethylenimine membranes NORTH STAR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE 18 Sept 1973 [19 Sept 1972] 43639/73 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] A reverse osmosis membrane is obtained by forming a film of polyethylenimine and then crosslinking the polyethylenimine by reaction with a reagent having functional groups which react with the amine groups. The film is formed from an aqueous solution of polyethylanimine and it may be formed on a support material. The polyethylenimine may be crosslinked by immersing the film in a solvent solution of the reagent. In examples polyethylenimine films are formed on polysulphone films as supports and are crosslinked by reaction with terephthaloyl chloride, tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate, cyanuric chloride and diphenyl ether disulphonyl chloride; the membranes are then used to desalinate brine by reverse osmosis.
