Abstract

Semipermeable composite membranes esp. for fractionating liquids are comprised of (a) an outer skin made from a polymer which is insoluble in water and effective in reverse osmosis or gas permeation, and (b) an ultrafiltering anisotropic membrane, such that the polymer (a) is of sufficient molecular wt. to give the anisotropic membrane (b) a retention factor of 100% for solutions of the polymer (a) and the exterior skin (a) is applied to the less porous side of the anisotropic membrane (b). Membranes have high activity in ultrafiltration and long working life.
