Abstract

Semi-permeable composite membranes, for use in reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration and gaseous permeation comprise (a) an outer skin of a water-insoluble polymer with reverse osmosis or gaseous permeation activity, and (b) an anisotropic ultrafiltering membrane, the polymer in (a) having a mol. wt. sufficient for the membrane in (b) to have a rejection rate of 100% for the polymer solns. and the outer skin (a) being in contact with the least porous side of membrane (b). The total thickness of (a) is 3 mu, pref. 1 mu, and (a) is pref. at least partially dense.
