Abstract
1440789 Coating with oxides; catalytic gas treatment MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 17 Sept 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 43519/73 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B1 and C2] A film of one or more metal oxides on a carrier is formed by (i) reacting an alcohol with a metallic acid of a metal selected from the transition metals of Groups IVa to VIIa to form an ester, (ii) coating the carrier with the ester, (iii) heating to gel the ester and (iv) baking to pyrrolize the gel and form the oxide. Specified ester-forming metals are Ti, V, Zr, Cr, Mo, W and Mn with the optional addition of compounds of Ni, Co, Cu, Ca, Sr and Zn. The carrier may be in the form of granular, sheet, wire, fibre or knitted or woven fabrics and may be diatomaceous earth, bentonite, acid and activated clays, activated carbon, silica, alumina, glass, ceramics or a metal. The examples describe (2) Cr and Ni oxides in glass fibre cloth which is used alone or combined with granular gamma-alumina as a catalyst for the oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in I.C. engine exhaust gases, (ii) Mo and Co oxides on gamma-alumina, and (iii) V, Mn and Cu oxides on a metallic wire mesh which is used for the oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and the reduction of nitrogen oxides in I.C. engine exhaust gases.
