Abstract

1425631 Exhaust gas treatment UNION CARBIDE CORP 26 Jan 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3999/73 Headings C1A C1J and C1N [Also in Divisions B1 and C2] Metal oxide (including silica-containing) fibres having a surface area of at least 5 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. are prepared by (i) impregnating a preformed organic fibrous material with (a) at least one metal compound which forms a metal oxide which sinters when the impregnated material is heated to a temperature sufficiently high to carbonize and oxidize the organic material and convert the metal compound to the oxide and (b) at least one metal compound which forms a metal oxide which does not sinter under the same conditions and in the presence of the first metal compound, the compounds being selected from those of the metals Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Sc, Y, La, Ce, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Al, Ga, Sn, Pb, U or of silicon; and (ii) heating the impregnated material to a temperature to carbonize and volatilize the organic material, form the metal oxides and sinter one of the oxides, at least a portion of the heating being carried out in an oxidizing atmosphere without ignition of the organic material. A catalytically active component, such as the noble metals or other transition metals or their compounds, can be incorporated into the fibres during preparation or impregnated on to the finished fibres. The fibres may be used to form a monolithic catalyst support. Catalysts based on the fibres may be used for the treatment of exhaust gases by oxidation of carbon monoxide or hydrocarbons and eduction of nitrogen oxides, for the production of nitric acid from ammonia and oxygen and for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide for sulphuric acid production. The examples relate to zirconia-alumina fibres impregnated with or incorporated with platinum, manganese oxide, cobalt oxide, chromium oxide, chromium oxide-copper oxide, copper oxide-manganese oxide, copper oxidevanadium oxide, platinum-manganese oxide or platinum-rhodium for exhaust gas treatment.
