Abstract
1440772 Inertia switches A FOHL 12 June 1973 [13 June 1972] 08849/76 Divided out of 1440771 Heading H1N A vehicle inertia switch device includes an electrically conductive ball mass 2, Fig. 4, resting on a substantially horizontal edge of a bore 3 the ball being displaceable by a predetermined acceleration of a housing 1 in a substantially horizontal plane so as to activate an electric circuit between concentric ring contacts 4, 6 and, for automatic restoration, the ring contacts (13, 14, Fig. 5, not shown) can form a conical mantle (15) subtending an angle (16) to the horizontal. In one embodiment Fig. 1 the housing 1 is resiliently supported to absorb vertical oscillations by being suspended between springs 78, 80 on a bracket 83 attached to a fixed part 84 of the vehicle. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the housing 1 has a tuning weight 102 at its base and is suspended as a pendulum within a fluid-filled container 98 and has a snapin cover which includes a pivot ball 92 bearing in a cover-plate 95 which is cushioned by resilient material 97 and the container is attached to the vehicle by a bracket 99. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the pivot ball (92) is movable within a bore (106) of a cover (105) and the housing can float as well as swing. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) additional control against vertical oscillations is provided by a permanent magnet (65) situated below a ball (63) of magnetic material and in a further modification (Fig. 7, not shown) an outer ring contact (69) is in the form of a wall liner to a housing (68) and is concentric with a cushioning layer (70).
