Abstract
1440771 Inertia switches; electromagnetic Switches A FOHL 12 June 1973 [13 June 1972] 27854/73 Heading H1N A vehicle inertia switch device, Fig. 1, comprises housing containing a ball mass 2 normally supported on the horizontally disposed edge of a circular bore 3 and activating an electric circuit when the ball is displaced from its rest position by a predetermined acceleration or deceleration of the housing in a substantially horizontal direction 19. A conductive ring 13 is insulated from a surrounding concentric ring 14 within a housing 1 and the ends of the rings adjacent the ball are conically convergent for automatic restoration of the ball after displacement. Damping means against vertical oscillations or forces comprise a cushioning plastics cylinder 20 freely mounted in a cover 21. Other damping means (Fig. 2, 3, not shown) may comprise a load of granular particles or a liquid surround and in Fig. 4 (not shown) the inner ring is dispensed with and the ball damped with a conductive brush (26). In an alternative construction, Fig. 6, the housing 44 is non- conductive and the damper mass 47 comprises a permanent magnet 47 which activates a reed contact unit 48 on movement of the ball 46 and in a further embodiment a permanent magnet damper activates field plates (51, 52, Fig. 7, not shown) whilst in another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the damper 58 forms a soft iron core for an induction coil (57), and in Fig. 5 (not shown) ball movement actuates a microswitch against a pressure plate 36. The sensor unit may also be hermetically sealed and the housing permanently evacuated.
