Abstract

1440617 Roller conveyers USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 22 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29813/73 Heading B8A [Also in Divisions B3 and G1] For guiding a casting from a vertical to a horizontal path in a continuous casting machine, roll clusters 31, 32 are mounted on supported frame sections 10, 12, 13 each having a concave circular edge carrying transverse reference pins 35 lying on a circle and each radially aligned with axes of the rolls so that they may cooperate with gauges to position the sections and clusters The frame sections are supported on fabricated base members 14, 15, 16 carried by structural elements 17, 18, 19, 20, duplicated on each side of the apparatus. If a curved mould is not used, a bending roll unit 22 is provided; straightening roll units 22, 21 and driving rolls 34 are provided. Frame sections.-Each section comprises parallel side plates 23, (23a) bolted together by transverse I-girders 24. Welded pads 26 carry the reference pins 35 and contain radial holes 27. The sections 10, 12, 13 are attached to their base member or the straightening unit 21 by pivot pins 36 and are interchangeable. Roll supports.-Supports 28 are bolted through the section holes 27 and carry idlerroll clusters 31, 32. The reference pins 35 project inwardly and/or outwardly of the side plates. Gauges.-Gauge 45, Fig. 5, has a hub 47 to fit over a pin 35 and a dial gauge 48 to engage the surface of a lower roll 31. Gauge 49, Fig. 7, has holes 52 to fit over reference pins and a hole 53. Gauge 62, Fig. 8, checks the curvature of assembled sections by engaging reference pins 35. Gauge 74, Fig. 9, has holes 77 to receive reference pins, a reference pad 78 and a reference face 79. Gauge 81, Fig. 10, has a hole 84 for reference pins and a reference arm 83. Assembly.-The section 10 is attached by a pin 36 to the straightener and adjusted so that the horizontal exit axis passes through a hole 37 (which may carry cross-hairs as may all other such reference holes). The gauge 49 is then used to position the pivot pin hole 36 on the base member 14 in alignment with the gauge hole 53 by using shims 55, 57. Mounting bolts 58 pass through enlarged holes to allow for thermal expansion. The section 12 is attached to the pivot pin 36 on the base member 14 and adjusted so that the hole 37 therein lies at a calculated position (checked by sighting means) and is additionally checked by the gauge 62. The gauge 49 is then used to position the base member 15. The section 13 is similarly mounted, additionally checking that the hole 38 lies on the axis of the vertical path of the casting. The bending roll unit 22 is then installed against the base 72 on columns 17 using the gauge 74 and the position of the first roll 85 is checked by the gauge 81.
