Abstract

1440445 Refractory composition IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Nov 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 52449/72 Heading C3N A liquid refractory composition comprises a particulate refractory material having a relative packing density greater than 63% as determined on the dry particulate refractory material, a binder and a liquid dispersing medium. The composition may contain 10- 90% by weight of refractory material, 0À5-35% by weight binder solids, 1-50% by weight of liquid dispersant and when present 0À01-10% by weight of fibres and 0À05-10% by weight of thickening agent. Numerous refractory materials, binders and dispersing media, are specified in the description, and the compositions are used in the preparation of moulds by investment casting. Suitable refractory materials are listed and the specific examples refer to the use of a graded synthetic aluminium silicate. Numerous binders are specified the most preferred being, silica sol and aluminium phosphate hydrochloride. The liquid dispersant may be water, a mineral acid, an alcohol, a glycol or a glycol ether. The thickening agent may be a clay, a cellulose derivative, fumed silica or starch. The liquid refractory composition may also contain fibres. The composition may be used in the production of moulds by the stucco process. The finished mould may be treated with hydrophobic substances, e.g. ethyl silicate or silanes or may be treated with a gas which reacts with the binder to form a gel, e.g. ammonia with hydrolysed ethyl silicate.
