Abstract
1440311 Polyester film IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Oct 1973 [6 July 1972] 31688/72 Heading C3R A shaped article is obtained by shaping a biaxially oriented heat set film of a polyester chain extended with a carbonate of a monohydric phenol. The preferred chain extender is diphenyl carbonate and the preferred polyester is poly(ethylene terephthalate). The chain extended polyester is made by polymerizing a glycol with a dicarboxylic acid or a diester thereof and then adding the chain extender preferably when the intrinsic viscosity of the reaction mixture has risen above 0À3 dl./g. measured on a 1% wt. solution in o-chlorophenol at 25‹ C., and continuing the reaction preferably until the intrinsic viscosity of the reaction mixture is at least 0À6 dl./g. The polymer is converted into film by extrusion and the film biaxially oriented and heat set by known methods. In the examples films are prepared from polyethylene terephthalate chainextended with diphenyl carbonate and containing titanium dioxide as filler and the films are shaped into slot liners and stamped interphase insulators.
