Abstract

Linear superpolyesters consisting of p-phenylene isophthalate units between which are dispersed p-phenylene terephthalate units, and having an intrinsic viscosity of >=0.5 dl/g. (as measured in 2,4,6-trichlorophenol at 75 degrees C) are made by putting a first phase contg. hydroquinone or chlorinated hydroquinone in a solvent, pref. aqs. in contact with a second phase, immiscible in the first phase, and contg. a mixture of isophthaloyl halide pref. chloride and terephthaloyl halide, pref. chloride, in a solvent. The two phases are mixed in the proportions that the quantity of hydroquinone is 0.90 to 1.10 of the amount of the stoichiometric amount of phthaloyl halides. The polymers are soluble in the solvents in which they were made: they are used for making films.
