1439725 Selecting piezoelectric crystals VESS ORDENA TBUDO KRAS ZNAM N I INST SINTEZA MINERAL SYRYA VNIISIMS 30 Jan 1974 04239/74 Heading H1E The quality factor (Q) of a piezoelectric material is assessed by measuring the frequency f at which the tangent of the loss angle (tan #) is a maximum. It is shown that such maxima occur at the same frequency in the curves of tan # versus f for different cuts of the same quartz crystal, and at different frequencies for different crystals. Moreover, a plot of log max against Q (measured) shows proportionality between these two factors and the plot serves as a calibration curve for assessment of Q. The measurements of tan # are made at constant temperature using a known bridge substitution method. It is stated that the method is also applicable to piezoceramics.
