Abstract

1439375 Electro-physical measurement - moisture BAYER AG 10 Aug 1973 [12 Aug 1972] 38009/73 Heading G1N In a micro-wave bridge arrangement for measuring the moisture in sheet material the micro-wave generator is FREQUENCY MODULATED so that interference due to reflections (varying with the sheet position) are averaged out. Typically the generator 1 may vary over a range of 8-12À5 Gc/s at a modulation frequency of 100 c/s and after regulation at 3, feed a frequency multiplier 4 providing a range of 16 to 25 Gc/s to the bridge. As shown the comparison and measuring arms are fed through a directional coupler 7. The measuring branch includes transmitting and receiving horns 8, 10 with the sample arranged between them preferably at the "angle-ofpolarization". Signals from the detectors 12, 13 are compared at 15 and the bridge is balanced by a preferably-servo-controlled damping element 11 whose position is indicated at 17. Alternatively the damper may be fixed and the out-of-balance voltage at 15 indicated. In a second embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown) the supply is 0-360 degrees phase-modulated (the bridge circuit being the same). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1248615
