1438998 Surgical drapes KENDALL CO 13 Nov 1973 52711/73 Heading A5R A surgical drape comprising a sheet 10 has a pocket 14 positioned between an aperture 12 in the drape and a side edge of the sheet, the pocket having a cavity and an upper edge 22 spaced from the sheet to define an opening facing towards the aperture whereby, in use, the fluid from the surgical site is received in the pocket. In one embodiment (Fig. 2), the pocket 14 is formed by folding a bottom edge (21) of a sheet 16 before attaching it to the sheet 10, the sheet 16 which is of plastics materials, cloth or paper being pleated horizontally or vertically at side edges 18 and at various points along the length of the pocket 14. The sheet 16 may be attached to the underlying sheet 10 at spots 30 and lines 32 below the upper edge 22. An absorbent material (33) (Fig. 3 not shown) either as a piece attached to the inner face (34) of the pocket or as a separate piece placed inside the pocket, and a liquid permeable, non-absorbent liner (592) (Fig 16 not shown) having a colour which contrasts with blood-red tint of a sponge (s) may be provided inside the pocket 14. In another embodiment (Fig. 4 not shown) the pocket 14 which is chevron-shaped is provided with an opening (36) at the point of the chevron. In the embodiments of Figs. 5 and 6, a rectangular reinforcement sheet 152 secured to the main sheet 150 has an aperture 163 in registration with an aperture 158 in the main sheet 150, and two pairs of longitudinally aligned fold lines 170a, 172a and 170b, 172b defining tucks 174a and 174b respectively, the tucks being secured to the reinforcement sheet 152 by lines of adhesive 176, and in another embodiment (Fig. 9 not shown) also by spots of adhesive (190) along an upper edge (182), to define pockets 178a and 178b each containing an absorbent material 133a or 133b either in the form of folded or rolled sheets, or a pad (Fig. 7 not shown), of cellulosic wadding or woven or non-woven fabric. In another embodiment (Figs. 10 and 11 not shown) pockets (278a, 278b) are formed in the main sheet (250) by folding the sheet along two pairs of longitudinally aligned lines in the manner described above. A drape (310) (Fig. 12 not shown) with a reinforcement sheet (352) secured to the main sheet (350) and having a pair of transverse fold lines (370, 372) which define a tuck (374), is also disclosed. Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown) disclose a tuck formed in the main sheet.
