Abstract

1438961 Light guides BICC Ltd 7 Jan 1974 [5 Jan 1973] 763/73 Heading G2J Light transmitted in a multiplicity of modes along a liquid-cored optical fibre is subdivided by dispersing light from the cladding at one region of the fibre substantially to prevent light passing in the transmission direction from that region along the cladding to a contiguous or adjacent second region of the fibre and heating the second region to reduce the difference in the refractive indices of the core and fibre so that some, but not all, the modes entering the second region pass into the cladding there, and are transmitted to a detector or other light receiver. The method is applicable to fibre bundles, and a separate detector may be provided for each fibre. The heater may be thermostatically controlled.
