Abstract

1438765 Thermographic materials WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 19 Sept 1973 [22 Sept 1972] 44041/72 Heading G2C A thermographic material comprises a support control with a layer of a binder, fine particles of a basic colour-former, fine particles of a phenol capable of liguifying and/or vaporizing between 60 and 200 C and reacting with the colour former and fine particles of hydrated silica, altapulgite clay and acid-treated montmorillonite clay which react with the colour former on heating to produce a coloured image. Specified colour formers are leuco dyes and spiropyrans. It is stated that this material performs better than the materials of specification 1135540, in that the inorganic material does not melt and flow away from the stylus under high temperature conditions. Comparative examples using non-reactive inorganic figments (talc, kaolin, TiO 2 and CaCo3) are given. Specified phenols are bisphenol A and p-phenyl phenol/formaldehyde resins.
