Abstract

1315288 Thermographic materials and transfer processes COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MFG CO Inc 13 April 1972 [12 July 1971] 17094/72 Heading G2C [Also in Division B6] A thermographically imageable translucent or transparent member, which can be used either as a planographic printing plate or as a projection transparency, is assembled face to face with a plastics sheer 30 carrying a heat-transferable oleophilic composition, so that reflex exposure with an infrared source 40 causes the members to be imaged with the oleophilic composition in the pattern of markings 12 on an original 10. Preferably the sheer 30 is of polyethylene terephthalate, and carries a coating of carnaube and paraffin waxes with polyethylene, optionally including a dyestuff. The imageable member is made up of an optional paper support sheet, a heat-shrinkable plastics film base 21, of polystyrene with a polyvinyl alcohol coating, of uncoated polystyrene or of polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene or styreneacrylonitrile, and a surface layer 22. The layer 22 comprises by weight 1 part of a hydrophilic colloid binder material such as polyvinyl alcohol, an insolubilizing agent, such as glyoxal, 2 to 5 parts of colloidal silica having an average grain size of 40 to 70 millimicrons and, optionally, up to 1 part of a filler such as clay.
