Abstract
1,271,405. Making printing plates electrophotographically. ITEK CO. April 22, 1969 [May 14, 1968], No. 20414/69. Heading G2H. [Also in Division B6] A printing plate blank comprises a substrate with a thermoplastic layer on it and may have a layer of e.g. gelatine or polyvinyl alcohol over the thermoplastic layer. When the thermoplastic layer is electro-photographically imaged and the image developed by heating, voids form in the thermoplastic layer within the image. Printing ink may be applied to the plate and be retained in the voids within the image, so that multiple printing operations can be carried out without re-inking, or the substrate may include an inkimpregnated layer and ink from the layer make its way to the surface of the plate by way of the voids. The ink may be in pressure-rupturable microencapsulated form. In place of ink, an oleophilic or hydrophilic material may be included in an impregnated layer, so as to modify the properties of the printing plate within the image, so that it may be used lithographically. Preferably the thermoplastic layer includes at least one photo-conductor. Materials for the plate are listed.
