Abstract

1438633 Cellular composites IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Aug 1973 [4 Sept 1972] 40952/72 Heading B5N A flexible cellular composite material comprising a compressed cellular thermoplastic polymeric sheet having at least a parallel array of longitudinally extending spaced continuous filaments or groups of such filaments embedded therein is produced by assembling two sheets of the cellular material (particularly of thermoplastics polyurethane) in a sandwich with the said array therebetween, and heating and compressing the sandwich to cause the cellular sheets to adhere and to reduce the thickness of said sheets at least in part to not more than 25% (and preferably less than 10%) of their uncompressed thickness. The layers may be bonded by compression over the whole surface of the composite or may be "point-bonded" by use of a roller or ball having projections. The cellular layers may be open- or closedcelled or may be reticulated. The filaments may be mono- or multi-filaments of polyethylene terephthalate, nylon 6, nylon 66, or glass. The composite may comprise a sandwich of three cellular sheets and two filamentary arrays, both the arrays being of longitudinal fibres or one of them being longitudinal while the other is of transverse fibres. Cellular sheets of variable thickness in the uncompressed state may be used to produce a composite of varying density after compression to a uniform thickness.
