Abstract

1438166 Ventilating buildings MESSIER 26 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 30319/73 Heading F4V An air-conditioning system for a plurality of rooms comprises an air-conditioning unit 1 which passes conditioned air via a duct 47 to room outlets 49, and extracts stale air from the room through apertures 33 in a false ceiling. A mattress 35 of sound and thermally insulating material is disposed in the false ceiling. The amount of conditioned air supplied to the outlets 49 is controlled by temperature sensitive electrical resistors 53 in the rooms; 55, 57 in the air return ducts 41, 43; 59 in a fresh air intake duct 45; and 61 exterior of the building. A thermostat 25, monitored by a sensor 65 in the air supply duct 47 is located in each room to control a shutter 23 of a ventilation opening 21. In operation, for a low external ambient air temperature, when the air temperature in that room is excessively high, the thermostat closes the shutter, thereby raising both the pressure in the room and the mattress 35 to permit hot air in the upper part of zone 63 to be more easily discharged to the airconditioning plant 1 by way of openings 39. Conversely, when the temperature in the room is too low, the thermostat opens the shutter, lowering the pressure and the mattress. This reduces the rate of escape of hot air in zone 63, while the cold air at the bottom of the room is gradually discharged to the outside via opening 21. For a high external ambient air temperature, the opposite occurs; when the temperature in the room is too high, the thermostat opens the shutter and if too low, the thermostat closes the shutter.
