Abstract

A mixture is sintered at a temperature of 1200 and 2000 DEG C, which contains aluminium nitride, silicon, alumina and preferably nitrogen silicide. The mixture contains a further substance, for example magnesium oxide which at the sintering temperature produces a molten glass which improves the density of the product. Heating is continued in the process until the ceramic phase of the product contains almost entirely silicon aluminium oxynitride.
