Abstract

1438004 Envelopes H BILDNER 8 Aug 1973 [9 Aug 1972] 37543/73 Heading B6A An envelope has a panel or strip heat sealed thereto so as to form a window, tear strip 22 or liner, an edge of the panel or strip 22 being recessed into the material of the envelope to produce a smooth surface on the envelope less likely to cause jamming in handling machines. The recess may be formed by thinning the envelope material, e.g. by treating it with brine or water and/or pressing. Alternatively, and as shown in Fig. 4, the recess is formed by pressing down a portion of the envelope, the resultant thinned side walls 23a, 23b of the recess facilitating tearing. The panel or strip is applied with the aid of heat and pressure and may be of a plastics material, imitation parchment or resin, coated with wax.
