Abstract

1437809 Liquid crystal compositions MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 15 Oct 1973 [17 Oct 1972] 48537/73 Heading C4X [Also in Division C2] A liquid crystal composition suitable for use in an electro-optic display device comprises p - n - butylbenzylidene - p - cyanoaniline. It may be mixed with further pp<SP>1</SP> -substituted benzylideneanilines, e.g. where the p<SP>1</SP> group is CN, the p group may be alkyl, alkoxy or acyloxy; and where the p group is alkoxy, the p<SP>1</SP> group may be alkyl. A list of such compounds, and binary and ternary mixtures therewith is given. Other additives include methyl red or indophenol blue (for dichroism) and hydroquinone and 2,4,6-tri-tertiary-butylphenol for extending the life of the material when used in the display device. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,373,609; 1,237,779 and 1,228,606.
