Abstract

Electro-optical liq. crystal element, contg. a nematic liq. crystal matl. with +ve dielectric anistropty, consists of one or more p-n-alkyl-benzylidene-p'-cyanoanilines, pref. having formula p-NC-C6H4-N=CH-C6H4-p-R (I) (where R is 3-6C n-alkyl), and one or more p-n-alkyl-cyanobenzenes, (II) (pref. in whch n-alkyl contains 3-6C) and/or p-alkyl-benzylidene-p'-alkoxy-anilines, pref. having formula p-R"2-O-C6H4-N=CH-C6H4-p-R'3, (III), (where R"2 and R'3 are Me, Et or 3-8 n-alkyl) and/or p-alkoxy-benzylidene-p'-n-alkyl anilines, (IV), (pref. contg. MeO or EtO and n-butyl or n-heptyl gps.). The elements are useful as indicator devices esp. of twist-nematic type for electronic clocks and multiplex driver systems. Elements with twist effect have a reduced operational voltage.
