Abstract
1437476 Irradication-modified cross-linked polymethane foams SCOTT PAPER CO 22 May 1973 [1 June 1972] 24415/73 Heading C3R A polyurethane foam comprising the reaction product of: (a) a polyol consisting of (i) a polyester polyol, (ii) a polyester polyol of M.W. not exeeding 1500 or (iii) a mixture of a polyester polyol of M.W. 400 to 5000 and polyester polyol of M.W. 250 to 6500; (b) an organic polyisocyanate; and (c) at least one cross-linking agent consisting of an at least bis-acrylate or methacrylate, triallyl cyanurate, methyl methacrylate, 1,5-cyclooctadiene or bis(beta-chloroethyl)vinyl phosphonate is subjected to ionising radiation at a dosage sufficient to modify the properties of the foam. Apart from (a), (b) and (c) the reaction mixture also includes a catalyst, e.g. a t-amine or metal salt; blowing agent; and optionally a surfactant, fillers, pigments, dyes, plasticisers or stabilizers. The ionising radiation has an energy of at least 50 ev., preferably at least 0À1 mev. The reactants and catalysts are extensively exemplified. The treatment is stated to increase the tensile and tear strength and improve the compression/deflection characteristics of the foam. Several possible applications of the product are specified.
