1437329 Boots &c G B BRITTON & SONS Ltd 6 July 1973 [7 Oct 1972] 46371/72 Heading A3B An element for incorporation in the waist of the sole of string-lasted footwear has, at opposite edges, upstanding projections to retain the string in the margin of the upper. In one embodiment (Fig. 1(a), not shown) the element is a metal plate substantially trapezium-shaped but slightly waisted and having on each side lugs bent out of the plane of the plate. In another embodiment (Fig. 3), a plastics, plate-like shank portion 3 is integral with a heel block 4, the sides of shank 3 having lugs 5 projecting outwardly to form hooks. In a further embodiment (Fig. 1(c), not shown) the element is made of plastics has a shank (6) and a heel block (7) with lugs or pegs (8) projecting from near the curved sides of the shank. A metal stiffener (9) may be provided. In manufacture, a plain last 10 is used and an insole may be placed upon it before the upper. The element may be placed on the last before or after the string is pulled and after the string has been pulled it is prised out from the stitched hem at the waist and hooked over the lugs 5. The folded-in margin of the upper around the heel fits in a cut away portion 11. The upper and last is then placed in a moulding machine for forming the outsole and remainder of the heel. The element may be a perforated plate or a wire frame. The lugs may have ratchet formations so that the string can be progressively brought toward the centre-line of the shoe.
