Abstract

1437120 2 - Aminonaphthoselenazole; 2- methylnaphthoselenazole CIBA-GEIGY AG 12 Nov 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 48778/73 Heading C2C 2 - Aminonaphthoselenazole having the formula is prepared by halogenating an aqueous acetic acid solution of a 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-oxonaphthalene-3-sulphonate or -sulphonic acid of the formula wherein m is an alkali metal or a hydrogen atom, by treatment with chlorine or bromine at a temperature of from 20‹ to 100‹ C., increasing the pH of the reaction mixture to within the range 5À0 to 9À5 and then reacting the halogenated compound with an aqueous solution of selenourea at a temperature of from 20‹ to 100‹ C. to produce a compound of the formula and then eliminating the sulphonic acid group by base catalysis using, for example, sodium or potassium hydroxide. 2-Methylnaphthoselenazole is suitably obtained by hydrolysing the compound of the invention, e.g. by means of potassium hydrooxide, in the presence of a reducing agent, e.g. an alkali metal or ammonium brorohydride, at a temperature greater than 130‹ C. in a highboiling solvent, e.g. ethane-1,2-diol, and acetylating the resultant hydrolysis product in situ with acetic anhydride in the presence of acetic acid to give a compound of the formula and then ring closing this compound, e.g. by refluxing with acetic anhydride, to produce 2- methylnaphthoselenazole.
