Abstract
1436995 Purifying graphite HOBEG HOCHTEMPERATURREAKTOR - BRENNELEMENT GmbH 18 July 1974 [23 July 1973] 31798/74 Heading C1A A process for purifying graphite comprises treating the graphite at elevated temperature with ammonium and/or an alkali metal hydrogen difluoride as an aqueous solution or in dry form, contacting the mixture with water when the dry form is used, and then separating the solution containing impurities. In one embodiment, the graphite is in an aqueous suspension or the hydrogen difluoride is in an aqueous solution and after contact the solution containing impurities is filtered off or decanted, the wet graphite is washed free of acid and then dried. In another embodiment, the graphite is mixed in powder form with dry hydrogen difluoride to obtain a uniform distribution, the mixture is heated to 125‹ to 240‹ C., cooled below 100‹ C., and washed with water to remove salts and other disassociation products. The process may be combined with other treatments, e.g. with an alkaline or alkaline-earth metal salt and/or with an acid to effect further purification. Unused hydrogen difluoride is preferably recovered and after purification recycled. The process is particularly useful for purifying graphite for use in nuclear fuel elements.
