Abstract

1436953 Machinery safety device E SICK [trading as ERWIN SICK OPTIK-ELEKTRONIK] 25 Sept 1973 [26 Sept 1972] 44883/73 Heading F2J [Also in Division G1] A light barrier screen such as may be used as a safety device to switch off a machine when an operator places his hand in a danger zone has a set of light sources which are pulsed in sequence by a single power supply. This minimizes the power requirements but provided the pulsing is rapid enough the safety device remains effective. A common detector may be used for all the light sources, and a reference detector may be used to compensate for ambient light, ageing or temperature effects. Fig. 1 shows a set of LED sources 11-16 fed in sequence from power supply 17 via sequential switch 17a. The light path from source 11 to a detector 26 via danger zone 24 is seen from above in Fig. 2, where the reference path to a detector 32 via mirror 42 is also seen. Similar paths exist via the other lenses of Fig. 1 from sources 12-16 to their respective detectors. Fig. 3 (not shown) and Fig. 4 show how use of a curved mirror 40 and a wedge 62 permit the use of a single danger zone detector 38 and a single reference detector 41. Detector circuit.-In Fig. 5 the pulses from detectors 38, 41 are amplified and applied to trigger 58; this gives a zero output as long as the signal from 38 is less than that of 41. A differentiator 59 gives an output only for a positive going impulse, while a differentiator 60 gives an output only for negative going impulses from 58. As a result, bi-stable 61 gives a train of regular pulses during normal operation, but if a light beam in the danger zone is broken one or more pulses from 61 is absent. This can be detected by a device such as a relay receiving the output of bi-stable 61. When this arrangement is used with Fig. 1 a switch synchronized with switch 17a connects the detector circuit to the appropriate pair of detectors. The arrangement is fail-safe.
