Abstract

1436606 Printers SIEMENS AG 3 Oct 1973 [31 Jan 1973] 46264/73 Heading G4H An ink-jet printer has a plurality of printing systems which move synchronously along a printing line, and a character generator which controls one printing system directly and the other(s) via intermediate storage. As disclosed two ink jet devices are spaced two character positions apart in a single head. To print two characters, one by each jet, the character generator supplies X and Y information for one character to the intermediate storage then X and Y information for the other which is passed together with that for the first character via registers for comparison with counts which are converted to analogue form to control the ink jets. In a first mode, the two jets simultaneously print first and third characters along the line respectively, then second and fourth, then the head moves four positions, and so on. In a second mode, the two jets simultaneously print adjacent characters, the head moving continuously. In printing a given line, mode 1 may be followed by mode 2, or mode 2 may be used for the whole line.
