Abstract
1436346 Metal oxides; NO 2 SOC CHIMIQUE DE LA GRANDE PAROISSE AZOTE ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES 9 May 1973 [15 June 1972] 22215/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division Bl] Catalytic compositions of specific surface 0À5-100 m<SP>2</SP>/g. are prepared by fusing together a compound of either or both of cobalt and bismuth together with a compound of a rare earth metal, Mg, Th, V, Nb, Cr, Mo, Mn and/or Fe, heating the fused constituents to ca. 700 C. to give, after cooling, a spinel, and thereafter shaping, wherein all or at least some of the ingredients are nitrates and any remainder are oxides, and the final composition contains at least 80 wt. per cent Co 3 O 4 and/or an oxide of bismuth and 0À5-20 wt. per cent of an oxide of another of the specified elements. An oxide or nitrate of an alkali metal may also be included. Examples describe the preparation from oxide/ nitrate mixtures of mixed oxides of Co + Ce + Nd+Mn, Co+Ce+Nd+Mn+Cr+Fe, Co+Ce and Co+Ce+K. Nitrogen dioxide is made by the catalytic oxidation of ammonia with, possibly oxygenenriched air, using the catalysts of the invention and an ammonia : oxygen ratio of 0À25-0À65 : 1 by vol., under a pressure of 1-20 bars and at 50-200 C. The oxidation may be performed in a fixed bed with a GHSV of 20,000-200,000 or in a fluidized bed of particles of size 50-700 Á with a GHSV of 50-2000.
