Abstract
1436225 Differential gearing V E GLEASMAN and R N BENJAMIN 13 June 1973 [12 July 1972] 28068/73 Heading F2D To provide substantial equalization of torque delivered at the two output shafts 12, 12a of a differential gear with helically toothed side wheels 11, 11a fixed to the output shafts and having their teeth inclined in the same direction so that end thrust on the two side wheels is additive in a direction towards one of the output shafts, e.g. towards the shaft 12a when the gear is driven in the direction corresponding to forward motion of a vehicle in which it is fitted, a friction-reducing thrust washer 15a comprising a multiplicity of radially disposed rollers (not shown) is mounted on that shaft between the side wheel 1 la and the casing. Within the casing, which is driven by a gear 22, are worms 13, 13a in mesh respectively with the wheels 11, 11a and carried by journal pins retained in the casing by pins 19. Three such worms are associated with each side wheel and each worm has a balance gear 14, 14a attached to each of its ends.
