Abstract

1435747 Ionization detectors BODENSEEWERK PERKIN-ELMER & CO GmbH 4 May 1973 [6 May 1972] 21361/73 Heading H1D A selective ionization detector comprises a housing 10 having a gas inlet 18 at the end of a conduit 22 for sample gas to which is connected a conduit 24 for combustible gas opening into the sample gas conduit upstream of the inlet so that combustible gas supplied through this conduit will mix with the sample gas before reaching the inlet, a pair of spaced electrodes 30 and 42, the first 30 of which includes an alkali source in the form of a body of alkali-containing glass and is located adjacent the gas inlet so that gas flowing from the inlet will be directed over the surface of the alkali glass body, and heating means capable of supplying sufficient thermal energy to the glass body to maintain it in a viscous or softened condition during operation. The gas inlet 18 terminates in a nozzle immediately below an aperture 20 in a partition 12 dividing the housing 10 into chambers 14 and 16. A sample gas from the separating column of a gas chromatograph mixed with a carrier gas is supplied to the nozzle through conduit 22. The combustible gas, e.g. hydrogen, is supplied through conduit 24 and combustion air is supplied through a conduit 28 to produce a flame 26. A bead 30 of alkali-rich glass is suspended in chamber 16 by leads 32 and 34 which also supply heating current to a heating resistor 40. Electrode 42 is a collecting electrode. Alternatively the bead 30 is suspended in the flame 26 on a platinum bracket 52. Combustion products are exhausted through outlet 50. Circuit arrangements are described (Figs. 2, 3, and 6, not shown) in which the nozzle is either maintained at a potential negative with respect to the collecting electrode or at the same potential as the collecting electrode or is connected to a switch to enable either connection to be selected so that the detector can be switched from selective to non-selective operation. The alkali in the bead 30 may berubidium for detecting nitrogen, or sodium for detecting phosphorus.
