Abstract

1435733 Automatic control of pressure TOYO SODA Mfg CO Ltd 16 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 23367/73 Heading G3R The pressure of a fluid delivered by a reciprocating pump is automatically regulated, the control being modified by a signal dependent upon the speed of the pump drive. In the embodiment, a piston-cylinder pump 1, 2 supplies liquid under pressure to a separation column in liquid chromatography apparatus. A signal dependent upon the pressure in the cylinder, as measured by a strain gauge 23 on a deformable diaphragm 5 of the cylinder, is amplified at 26 and compared in differential amplifier 24 with a desired value 29. Any difference is used to vary the speed of D.C., synchronous or pulse motor 11 that drives the reciprocating piston. The difference signal is modified in amplifier 31 by a rate feedback i.e. by the speed of motor 11, as sensed by tachometer 24, to damp pressure oscillations. Two such pumps applying suction or pressure may be used alternately.
