Abstract

1435467 Silicon nitride articles PLESSEY CO Ltd 16 Jan 1975 [10 April 1974] 16021/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] Silicon nitride articles are prepared by a method which includes the steps of providing a dense silicon nitride compact, forming the compact into a desired shape, providing a silicon powder and mixing it with a binding agent, forming the mixture round the dense Si 3 N 4 compact to form a silicon powder compacted layer around the dense Si 3 N 4 compact, and at least partially nitriding the silicon powder compacted layer. The Si powder preferably has a particle size not greater than 200 British Standard mesh and is mixed with 15% by weight of the binding agent. The partially nitrided compacted Si powder layer may be shaped and then completely nitrided. Shaping may be by grinding or hot forging.
