Abstract
1435329 Moulding composite lenses POLAROID CORP 2 May 1973 [2 May 1972 (2) 26 June 1972 7 Dec 1972] 20914/73 Heading B5A A composite lens comprising a light polarizing element between two moulded elements of synthetic polymer is formed by placing the light polarising element across a resilient mould part defining the lens periphery, closing the mould with first and second rigid mould parts defining the lens faces and injecting by means of a syringe, polymerisable material into the mould to fill the cavities on each side of the light polarizing element, and polymerizing the material, there being transfer means, e.g. ports in the light polarizing element, the material being injected into only one cavity and passing into the other through the transfer means. As shown, the resilient mould part 22 locates light polarizing element 23 and the rigid parts 20, 24, e.g. of glass are held by clamp 26. Elements 23 have ports 25 therein for transfer of moulding material. The shallower cavity may be defined in depth by projections on element 23 or by a rim 21 on part 20. The resilient mould part may have a notch (4, Figs. 1-3, not shown) to locate the polarizing axes of the element 23 and a groove (5) to identify the axes in the moulded lens for location in a grinding machine.
