Abstract
1347762 Moulding lenses POLAROID CORP 15 April 1971 9523/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division G2] A light polarizing plastics lens is made by positioning a polarizing element 1 in a mould 6-9, injecting a synthetic monomer on each side of the polarizing element and polymerizing it to form the lens. The mould has rigid glass portions 6, 7 to form the lens faces and flexible rubber or vinyl sides 8, 9 whereby shrinkage of the lens during curing is accommodated. The mould is held together by a clamp 10 or lips on the flexible sides 8, 9. A more complex lens (Fig. 2, not shown) is made from a polarizing sheet of polyvinyl alcohol containing oriented and partially dehydrated molecules and having bonded to each side a supporting layer (4) of a dyed cellulosic plastics. This is roll coated on both sides with cellulose nitrate (5) to improve adhesion of the outer layers 2, 3, and is pressed into spherical contour. A disc of this is placed in the mould, a catalyst and monomer are mixed together, optionally with dyes and U.V. and I.R. absorbers, and the mixture is injected with a syringe through the flexible mould walls 8, 9. The concave face or both faces of lens may be ground and polished. Examples of acrylic monomers and cold-curing thermosetting monomers are given.
