Abstract

1435138 High frequency plasma torch VEREINIGTE EDELSTAHLWERKE AG 17 Aug 1973 [8 Sept 1972] 39009/73 Heading H5H [Also in Division H2] A high frequency "cold plasma" torch in which the conductive torch tube 1 through which plasma forming gas flows is connected to a high frequency generator 12, is ignited by temporarily connecting an insulated metal pin 5 within the tube 1 to earth to cause an arc between the pin 5 and tube 1. The tube 1 is connected to generator 12 by closure of switch 11 and the pin 5 is temporarily earthed by depression of a push button switch 10 which causes a circuit breaker or high speed contactor 9 to complete the earth circuit. After ignition the earth connection is broken. The torch is used for two stage surface hardening in which a thin surface layer of metastable austerite formed by rapid heating and cooling is converted to a tough martensite structure. The earthed metal pin 1, e.g. of tungsten, is insulated from tube 1 by an insulating member 4. The plasma gas is supplied to tube via an inlet 3 and the plasma exists through a tungsten nozzle 2.
