Abstract

1435083 Gas turbine combustion chambers; vaporizers ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 26 July 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 37305/72 Heading F1L [Also in Division F4] Air and fuel supplied separately to a hollow stem 22 of a gas turbine engine fuel vaporizer rise in the stem and the mixture is discharged via at least one branch 24 radial to and connected to the stem 22, and an annular space 28 defined between stem 22 and a cylindrical shroud 26 therearound receives air but not fuel, the air passing out of space 28 through holes 30 in shroud 26 in a direction substantially radially of the stem 22 to mix, downstream of and adjacent to the discharge from branch 24, with the air/fuel mixture discharged from branch 24. The radial air-flow through holes 30 promotes further mixing of fuel and air in the primary combustion zone, and the discharging of the stem-cooling air radially rather than axially from space 28 prevents a flame from stabilizing on the vaporizer downstream of the branch or branches 24. The vaporizer may be of L-shape with one branch 24 or T-shape with two branches 24. Weirs 32 create turbulence in the branches 24 to aid cooling thereof. The vaporizers may be incorporated in an annular combustion chamber, or in reverse-flow combustion chambers, or in an annular array of cylindrical combustion chambers.
