Patented May 6, 1952 UNITED STAT Prtii y'i" FFICE LIQUID FUEL BURNER John Stanley Clarke, Biacko, near Nelson, Albert Edward Clarke, Brieriieid, Burnley, and Noel Parker Coupe, Burnley, England, assignors to Joseph Lucas Limited, Birmingham, England Application December 27, 1949, Serial No. 135,il8l In Great Britain January 1, 1949 radial air tubes to the central tube, fuel injection nozzles at the ends of the primary combustion tubes remote from the base plate, and air bafiies associated with apertures in the base plate opposite the adjacent ends of the'combustion tubes.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of a burner embodying the invention, and Figures 2 and 3 are end elevations of the opposite ends of the burner.
Referring to the drawings, there is provided a base plate a adapted to be mounted at right angles to the axis of the main combustion chamber adjacent to the end at which air is admitted to the chamber. In this plate is formed an aperture to which is secured one end of a central air tube 2) which extends from one side of the plate into the main combustion zone, the other end being closed. Adjacent to the closed end are secured a plurality of radial air tubes which at I their outer ends terminate in primary combustion tubes 11 arranged around and parallel with the central tube. The ends of the primary combustion tubes adjacent to their connection with the radial tubes are closed, and at each of such ends is attached a fuel injection nozzle 6. The other ends of the primary combustion tubes are open and are located at a suitable distance from the base plate a. Also in positions immediately opposite these ends there are formed air apertures j in the base plate, and over the exit side of each aperture is secured a bafiie g which is adapted to divert air into the main combustion zone.
In addition other radial tubes it may be provided between the central tube and the primary combustion tubes for admitting a restricted supply of air to the latter tubes near their open ends.
The liquid fuel is conveyed by a helical vaporising tube 2' surrounding the primary combustion tubes and terminating in a small chamber y attached to the closed end of the central tube. From this chamber radial tubes k extend to the nozzles. The end of the tube 2' remote from the chamber 7 is adapted for connection to a fuel supply source.
By this invention we are able to provide liquid fuel burner in a simple and robust form, and at the same time ensure a minimum of risk i extinction of the flame from the primary combustion tubes, when conditions in the surrounding main combustion region are such as to tend to cause temporary extinction the flame therein.
Whilst the invention is especially intended for the particular purpose above specified, it may be employed for other analogous purposes.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A liquid fuel burner, comprising the combination of a base plate having a plurality of apertures therein, a central air tube secured to and extending from one of the apertures in the said plate, a plurality of primary combustion tubes arranged around and parallel with the central air tube, radial air tubes connecting the central air tube to the primary combustion tubes, fuel injection nozzles at the ends of the primary combustion tubes remote from the base plate, and air baffles arranged between the other apertures in the base plate and the ends of the primary combustion tubes adjacent to the base plate.
2. A liquid fuel burner as claimed in claim 1 and having in combination therewith a fuel vaporising means connected to the fuel injection nozzles.
3. A liquid fuel burner as claimed in claim 1, and having combined therewith additional tubes interconnecting the central air tube and the combustion tubes and adapted to admit a restricted supply of air to the latter near their ends adjacent to the base plate.
